This month seven CLA students participated in the astronomy division of the Hawaii District Science and Engineering Fair, and two of their projects qualified for States. For her project, Bethany DeLoach verified the Tully-Fisher relationship in a galaxy that is over 500 million light years away, while Caleb Vogt and Christian Lee measured the amount of dark matter in the same galaxy. Joshua DeCleene and Blayk Hanoa reported on spectra of solar system planets, and Makala Hayashida and Seth Glenn determined the ages of two star clusters (Messier 3 and the Pleiades). Makala and Seth won 3rd place in astronomy (6th place overall), and Caleb and Christian won 2nd place in astronomy (5th place overall); both of these projects qualified for States. Based on the quality of his project, Caleb Vogt received the UHH Chancellor’s Award, consisting of a year’s tuition to the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Congratulations to all of these students for their hard work!
